Why, if you ask an American: don't you know your ABC?

they just stare. Aren't they taught to read with an ABC?
P.S. One asked me where to download it, and the other said that "in order to read and know the ABC I need a yahoo ID"

Well, to be honest with you the only time I need to know those is when i get pulled over for drunk driving.
