The tongue is for comfort. It is to prevent lace bite.
In order to hold the shoe in place the laces generally need to be pretty tight, especially on an athletic shoe, if the laces were just pressed against the foot there would be a great deal of irritation (lace bite)

Not only does it keep the laces from annoying your foot, but before there was a tongue the width of the hole to put your foot in had to be very narrow, and so it was longer too.

The tongue makes it possible to have a whole different sort of shoe that is shorter and stiffer, protecting your foot better while conforming better to a foot shape.

I think the tongue is used to help get hre shoes on. Also, if your laces are undone, your foot could come out of the top. When one is walking or running, the tongue probably keeps the top fot he shoe sin place

I think the tongue is to give extra support on the top of the shoe. Good luck on your speech!

I think it has something to do with the shoe lace but I'm not quiet sure. Good luck on your speech!

if it weren't there the laces in the shoes would irritate your foot and probably cause blisters
