When I'm playing, it seems like I can only play at my house.... I can send my adult sims to work.. But I can't see what they're doing at work? If my teen or kids sims at school, I can't see them at school? Do I need the expansion packs to do these things?

yeah i dont think there is an expansion pack for that. University maybe, I don't have it though. But I'm pretty sure that the house is the only place you can play at besides the community lots that you visit

well in the base sims 2 game, you can call taxi and go to community lot
university-college....looooong time
nightlife-downtown(probably the best expansion pack if you want variety)
open for business-shopping district-bluewater village-sims can also build and own a community lot
pets-pet parks and stuff.

havent invented one dear but the closet one would be send your sim to colledge
