Hi!
First of all, I personally believed the subject is more a matter of religious beliefs and in some cases, not so much a person's religion, but the ideas instilled in us by our parents when we are kids.
Now, considering you are addressing your question to people of a relatively older age (adolescents and adults), I am afraid that men, are the ones who attribute a much higher degree of importance to this matter.
Unfortunately however, I believe they do so mainly for egotistical reasons. Yes it is true that as I mentioned before, both sexes are influenced by our families and friends as children. It is also true that religion is a great factor.
This said, the reality of things is that we are living in a world and society which, generally and largely speaking, is no longer ruled by religion and obedience... therefore, if a woman chooses to "experiment" prior to marriage in her viewpoint (and that of her females friends and family members who are as open-minded as her) this won't be a problem.
For the males (family, friends, and in-laws) around her, on the other hand, despite their probable confession of being quite open-minded and modern, the matter of the male ego, does not cease to be as real as my responding to this question...
... and as stone-age as it might sound, reality is ALL men dream of marrying a virgin.

I think culturally its more important in women,
a woman with multiple partners is looked down upon, while a man with multiple partners is looked up to.
if a male teacher couples with a female student, she is automatically a victim and he's a pervert, but when a male student gets involved with a female teacher he is once again heralded as a stud.
Male relatives will actively try to get male relatives hooked up, while they are more likely to intimidate the female relative's potential suitors and if not keep her chaste at least postpone the activity.
for individuals for the most part, i think that men see sex as an act for its own sake while women see it more as a physical expression of emotions, whether for the partner they are with, or for any partner they wished they could have.
there is an old saying, "Men will use love to get sex, while women use sex to get love." I forget who said it

I don't feel that virginity is important to either males or females these days. With people marrying at a much later age, than a century or two ago, who would expect a 30 year old to still be a virgin. In fact, I would find it creepy to marry someone way past their teens that had never had sex.

Well, its important to me. I'm 21 and I've never had sex before. Sex is supposed to be a beautiful experience meant for a husband and a wife. I know that sounds archaic but I believe it. It's not just a religious thing either. It's like saying I love you if you do it too often it loses its meaning. I'm a complete romantic and when I find that special guy that I want to spend the rest of my life with I want my virginity to be my wedding gift to him.

Its more important to females, and its normal.
Maybe this is off topic, but i really don't understand people who expect and actually look for wife who would be a virgin...
Well it just doesn't go that way...Boys these days want to sleep with many girls but at the end want a virgin,i think those two are a little opposite,no?
Of course, there are exceptions and I'm glad or that...

It is funny reading some of the comments from the men who want virgins for their future wives. Funny because I doubt they are "untouched" and "clean" themselves. I think if a woman chooses to be a virgin it is because she wants to be and not for the man. Most fathers of daughters want their daughters to be virgins because they know what men are really looking for when they look at their darling little girls. They are just trying to protect them. My husband would do anything to protect our two darling daughters.

Obviously it is down to individual differences however for me, I personally think it is more important to men. Young girls these days seem to lose their virginity at a very young age and all they seem to be bothered about every week is attracting a guy. When a guy sees a seriously beautiful girl he considers her 'precious' and 'fasinating.' The thought of plentiful guys entering her and moreover her not considering it a major issue upsets the man and makes him feel arounsed and poignantly disappointed simutaneously.

It used to be more important to men since nobody wanted to be duped into raising somebody elses children, but thesedays it is not as important. THat doesnt mean that men will take a woman which has done Vegas.
