1. Buy a current copy of Writer's Market. It is the best starting point for any true writer.
2. Act as if you are true professional. This means any time any of your writing appears in public, such as your question above, it is properly formatted, no spelling errors, no grammatical errors, no punctuation errors. Editors and publishers (as well as readers) are rabidly turned off by sloppy writing, even if is just in something as simple as your question here at Yahoo.
3. You do not need a publisher in YOUR area. Most publishers are located in New York but in this day and age, there are tons of publishing companies worldwide that are possible options for you.
4. Unless you aim for smaller press publishing, you'll need an agent. All the previous steps I listed also apply to agents.
5. Good luck. You're going to need it.

This question has been asked and answered many times here and you will find a lot of valuable information if you surf through the Resolved Questions here.

Secondly get a copy of Writers Market and start reading. It doesnt have to be the latest issue (it's pricey) you can buy a used one on half.com. Not that much changes in it from year to year.

Dont worry about the publisher being in your area. We live ina world of instant messages and e mails. It is very easy to communicate with publishers, editors and agents from your very own desk.

I also highly recommend you visit Preditors and Editors (they are listed if you Google them) and bookmark them. Dave K keeps it very up to date with tons of information including listings on who to avoid in the publishing world. His information is great. You should also join Absolute Write Water Cooler Forum and share with other authors, editors agents and publishers. Occasionally they have guest agents who answer questions.

There is a lot to learn about the publishing world. Most of us learned the hard way by making terrible mistakes early on. I know I sure did.

The secret is to just remember that whoever you decide to send your query letter to, you follow their submission requirements to the letter. Send exactly what they want in exactly the form they want it. Otherwise expect a very nice form letter in the mail saying "thanks but no thanks".

You can query small publishers directly (check the name in Publishers and Editors first and make sure they are recommended!) but to reach A List publishers, you need an A List agent.

Expect many rejections before you find someone who will work with you. Develop a thick skin because otherwise the rejection letters will drive you nuts. I heard that James Patterson got 61 rejection letters before he sold a book.

Education is your friend in this case. The more you know the more likely you are to make a breakthrough. Read and learn a LOT before you do anything.

Last piece of advice -- make sure your manuscript is totally clean before you send it to anyone. That means no typos, perfect punctuation etc. Nothing drives editors and publishers more crazy than reading flawed work. Again, instant rejection. Take a lot of time to go over your work and fine tune it. It will help tremendously.

Good luck. C.

Hi Rocky,
I'd suggest that you do a Google search on publishers and ebpublishing companies on the internet. Also its a must have a copy of the Writers Digest Book, and magazine there you will find completely everything you need. Last advice, email me for my personal publishers list which I use. I can also forward the publishing company I'm under contract with contact information.
Good Luck, jaja

Buy the "Writers Market". It lists publishers, agents, etc.

Also, you how to write. If you're writing is anything like you asked this question, you won't get far.
