In the movie, Anakin and Obi-Wan battle each other on the highly volcanic planet Musafar, a planet with lava flows that look like Niagara Falls. At points in the battle, they are standing within inches of the lava. Could a human being survive such an environment, considering the heat and other factors such as noxic gases, etc.?

No not really but Anikan and Obi Wan were not normal humans they were highly trained Jedi who probably would have be disciplined enough to no let it effect them. That probably what Lucas would say anyway.

Yes, they could, if there was enough air movement around them, and the tempature of the environment was low enough. But in the case of Star Wars, the reason it was possible there was because it was in the script.
