Historically airlines made a 5% commission on air tickets. The last time I was in Singapore I heard that Singapore Airlines were selling tickets direct to the public at the same price as they sold to travel agents...so many people just use Singapore Airlines direct.

Travel agencies usually get the tickets a a very low price and they sell that at more then they paid for them
