1. You might be breaking the law. In many places, releasing non-native species is against the law. In other places, releasing ANY captives is illegal.
2. If the water temps are below the 60's, it will not do well until the temps warm up.
3. If it can avoid dying from predation, cold water, disease, etc. and can find food and shelter it will probably live.
4. In many parts of the US, Red-ears are alien species that out-compete the native species. By introducing them, they disrupt the natural order and are causing many rare and threatened species to become even more rare.
In general, this is not a good idea. You may want to try giving it away instead- putting up flyers in local pet shops offering the turtle for free often works.

it would not be good here are some reasons
1. he is probly use to the warm water uve been supplying him
2. he has never been any where besides that small tank so he would be frightend about all the other creaters.
3.he probly isn't use to catching his own food.
4.he is most liky going to get eaten bye another animal he dosnt know better to stay away from.
5.you will probly worry about him all the time
6.if u keep care of the turtle good he has a better chance of living to around 20-40 years. in the wild he wont even come close to that long.
dont take this the wrong way but also think about if u where droped in a place where u cant defend fore your self. u would be lost and lonley :(
if u realy dont want the guy pls bring him back to the store or try asking around if any one wants him. they are cool animals !!!!!

Probably nothing, as these turtles are common almost everywhere in the USA. We find them crossing the roads here and keep them for pets, so as long as they are common in your area, it should be fine. Its a wild animal and its instincts will help it to survive.

Don't release pets into the wild. Even if they were to exist naturally in that part of the world, having kept them as pets has deprived them of the knowledge of how to survive in the wild.

I would never consider it if the turtle has been kept inside for any amount of time. Once you've made the commitment and brought them inside I feel that you are responsible for the rest of their lives.

If you caught him out of the wild, then he should be fine if you set him free, as long as you havnt had him very long, but if he is from a pet store, then NO you cant set him free, he will definately die, becuase he wont know how to catch his food, he will probably become food to a bigger fish,
