Most modern water coolers have a nozzle in them that breaks through a small plastic cap in the water jug when you place it on the cooler. You don't have to worry about spilling the water because of the small cap ... it allows the water jug to be held upside down without the water spilling out.

I've done it. The girls always look for the men to do it when it is time.
You have to peel of the seal and then covering the top with your palm quickly flip it, holding the bottom with your other hand and the manuever it over the opening, pull your palm away and then quickly drop it in. You usually do spill a harmless drop or two, which you have to wipe up, but by covering the throat with your palm the vaste majority of water is held in.

There is a little plug at the mouth of the jug that won't let water out unless it's pushed up and in (while inverted). Once it is set down on the base, the plug is pushed in and it allows water to flow.

LOL! usually it's just a matter of doing it quickly and smoothly. the people who are good at it have a reputation and we wait for them to walk by and grab them to change the bottle.
I used to work in an office that had the kind of water bottles that were punctured by something in the stand only after the bottle was placed in correctly. so no spills ever. genius!

we have one in my office. when you pull the sticker off, there is a tiny plastic cover on it. when you turn it upside down, it keeps the water from spilling. then when you put it on the water cooler, there is a piece that pushes up into the jug and allows the water to then come.

It has a spring loaded plug in the end that is pushed back by a pin when the bottle is placed onto the cooler.
When its empty and removed, or if full, the plug springs back into place in the neck of the bottle when it is removed.

Many believe that when you can answer this question you have solved the biggest puzzle of all.....
The meaning of life.
Either that or the guy who said it breaks the seal when you INSERT it. I love that word I use it whenever possible, I like to INSET it into sentences.

It takes practice. Take it from someone who had splashed water all over the place more than one!
I'm an expert now, though.

Ours has a seal over the opening. When the bottle is inserted, the seal is broken. I don't know if they're all like that.
