I have an old pocket knife that I cannot open, it is dirty with grease and gunk on and in it. I need to find out how to clean it without runing it. It's an old relic of my dad's. Please give me some good pointers.

You guys are so helpful, everyone seems to think wd40 will work. I'm going to see what happens. I value honest answers, these are great!

Get a spray can of WD-40 to use on the knife. Just put the knife into a basin that can get dirty, then spray the crap out of it inside and out. Work the action of the knife until it opens smoothly. If it is still dirty after you get it working, you can run it under HOT water, the HOTTEST you can get it from the sink. Use hot water because it will evaporate pretty quickly, and by drying it with a towel then lightly coating it with WD-40 you can prevent further rust. Good luck.

if your have a really course typre of dirt or sand. spar the knife with wd40. drop in the sand and keep working the knife this acts like liqid sandpaper. and cleans all the stuff that you will never get out with any tool. once the knife opens and closes easily spray librailly with wd40 again and work the knife untill no more gritty feeling or scratching sound is made.wipe to get excess of but alow it to still have a good coating of oil to keep it from rusting. penetrating oit and a wet stone will help to keep the knife sharp too.

The best is if you have an ultrasonic cleaner handy. Put the knife in a Ziplock freezer bag with Penetrating Oil or as a minimum WD-40. Then zip it shut and give it a soak in the ultrasonic machine for 20 minutes.

Otherwise you might just have to soak it in Penetrating Oil for a couple hours. Follow up with an old toothbrush and scrub out what you can.
