Depends on how you define "meritocracy". I've seen merit pay schemes and they don't work. All they do is reward the teachers who are best at sucking up to the political pigs, not the ones who are the best teachers.

Do you mean kids should be rewarded for accomplishment and not for simply showing up (occasionally), or that good teachers should be paid appropriately, while bad ones thrown out on their butts (like any other occupation)?
Don't let the teachers union hear you say these 'mean-spirited' things.
You obviously don't care about the 'self esteem' of these little losers.

It is right and a needed thing. Children need to be taught they are rewarded in the world based upon the usefulness they bring to it. Simply showing up accomplishes nothing.

no, I say punt the stupid and dont let them get home loans or credit cards and work in Mc Donalds for the rest of their lives!!!
