Also go with aspen, corncob, or recycled bedding (they create less allergies). Don't forget a rolly ball either. They need exercise. You will need to get chew sticks, food and dishes for food and water. Here are a few more links.

ok, between petsmart and petco, petsmart usually has more to offer, but they carry most of the same products.
for the cage, you want to get an all wire cage, no glass tanks with a wire top. all wire cages give the hamster the ventalation that they need, and plastic cages are easy for them to chew out of or push open. try to get something with levels, petsmart sells an all wire cahe with a metal bottom(the wire is white and the bottom is purple) it have 3 levels to it, it's not too big, but it gives the hamster a lot or room. it's $40(or somewhere very close to that price)
as for the type of hamster, you should get a black bear, hunny bear, calico or tortoise shell, they are the best in temperment, they are all about $20, but worth the extra money. Long or short haired hamsters are quite a bit cheaper but usually have rather nasty temperments. (these are all types of
syrian hamsters)
for the bedding, you want to get Aspen, petsmart should tell you that, petco however thinks carefresh is better....
care fresh causes respiratory infection, dosen't help much with the smell(it kinda stinks by itself let alone with pet wastes on it)
You also want to get some cotton(it will be a lot cheaper to go to Wal-Mart and get it form the arts and crafts section, the pillow and blanket stuffing kind, then to get the small packs from the pet store) just give the hamster a handful of it and they'll put it where they want it to be.
The need something to hide in, like a castle or something from the petstore will work.
For food, get a hamster/gerbil based seed diet. I personally like Nutrophase(Pet Smart). You can give them small amounts of veggies(no more than 1 tsp a day) and fruits(no more than 1 tbsp a week). You want to give them green veggies, stay away from iceburg lettice, and don't give them citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, stick with apples, pears, grapes....
If you go to PetSmart, ask them for a careguide, it's a paper they print out with basic information. Also, if you go to Petsmart, look up their products online and print them out, if they are cheaper online, when you take in the print out they'll give you that price to save you some money.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to email me...I hope this helps you...

The best cage that's got a plastic bottom with wire top is the triple level Super Pet cage. They run about $40.
I found the ones listed below on Pet Smart's site and picked out some for you to look at.
1) All Things Living Deluxe Hamster Kit for $34.99
2) Critter Trail 3 for $44.99 (this one is more difficult to clean)
If your parents were willing to order one for you from the internet the last site has a large selection of different hamster cages to choose from. The cages run from $14-$58 depending on size and style. This is your best bet if you can get your parents help on ordering and you give them the money. They're cheaper then any pet store. I've bought about 30 cages from them personally for my small animal rescue.
Also for a Syrian make sure you get a medium size solid wheel, they're better for the hamsters spine. We replaced all the original small wheels that came with the cages with a large solid wheel for the Syrians of all ages. A Syrian can grow to be 4" long.

Go to PetSmart and PetCo websites. The items listed there are usually available in the stores. Compare the various cages on the 2 websites. Once you have narrowed down your choices, call both the stores and find out if they have the items in stock and ask what the in store prices are. This way you are not running all over town and know what your cost will be.

OK!!! U can get these at Petsmart
Get a 10 gallon aquarium with a mesh wire lid which provides plenty of ventilation, easy to clean, and they cant kick bedding out or get out($50 lasts a long time)
Corncob bedding with the green pebbles because it eliminates odors, 1/2 the price and twice the bedding of normal bedding and you can safely clean it in 2-3 weeks as opposed to 2-3 days ($10 lasts 2 4-6 weeks)
You can get a stick on water bottle with turtle mineral in it for $5 and lasts for 6 months
Food is usually $5 and lasts 2 months
Do not get the silent spinner wheel it is not silent and breaks easily. Get one without holes in it so their feet dont get caught. A good wheel lasts a month and is usually $5-$10
Toys are usually $20 and there are some at your house such as toilet paper(for extra fluff non scented) and tp and pt rolls for chewing and tubes.
The cage will give your little friend plenty of room for playing, running, and relaxing.
Also buy a special green apple spray and use it on places such as the wheel to eliminate chewing.
You do not need a food dish because they burry and move their food constantly as an instinct. They are also a waste of money.
Have fun with your little friend!!!

when i got my 2 gerbils, i got my parents to dirve me to Petsmart, and we got a 10 gal. tank with a wire mesh lid. (this can also works for hamsters)
the reasons i like the tank are:
you can see them better than in a crittertrail or something like that
it's spacious
they can't kick bedding out on the floor
it's easier to clean(no wires)
they can't escape
i hope i helped!!

the 10 or 20 gallon fish tank is the best. you can get a top for it. you can see thru it all around and your hammy can't chew on the bars and drive you crazy. also they are not that exspensive so you will have some money to spend on toys and food and things. we got our 10 galon at wal-mart for 10 bucks!!
