I've wondered this for a while. In high school and college basketball, there's a possession arrow to determine who gets the ball on a tieup so they don't need to do a jump ball. How is it determined who has the possession arrow at a given time?

At the start of the game there is a jumpball. The team who doesn't get the ball gets the arrow to begin with. Then if there is a jumpball the team with the arrow gets the ball. At the start of the 2nd half the arrow switches because the teams switch baskets, so the team with the arrow at the end of the 1st half will still get the ball.

At the tipoff at the beginning of the game one team gets control. At that point the possesion arrow goes to the other team. When their is a tieup that team gets the ball and the arrow switches teams.

If you win the tip off, the other team has the posession arrow, and then it just keeps alternating
