check with your choir leader first. Explain what sensations you experience, and that you are uncomfortable. You will probably get some advice for abdominal breathing ( diaphragmatic breathing), and how to relocate your center of activity form your throat to your body.
Good singing uses the big muscles of your belly and back ( as opposed to taxing those less-than-an-inch-long vocal cords) to support the sound. It takes some patience to learn this, and you need to practice with concentration, not just blindly repeat scales.
When you laugh, you will feel those muscles at work, so take heart, you can do it.
How about taking singing lessons? A real teacher is always so much better than all the good advice you might ever get here : D
Best wishes and keep on singing

If its hurting STOP right now , you are trying to sing from your throat instead of breathing in and letting the notes flow natural
also its sounds like you are trying to sing in a key too high for your voice, it should not hurt if you are singing in the right key and i mean singing, not screaming as loud as you can , try singing in 2 keys lower than what you are now or get a singing teacher to give you lessons

Put both you hands on the wall and step away as if you're about to be searched by a police officer. Make sure the pressure is on your abdomen and practice singing that way until you can feel the vibrato over your upper lip or on the top of your head.

start singing when you get up to like comb your hair in the morning. just go "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa" and keep going up from low C to high C like C D E F G A B C .
And do that when you feel like you havent been using your voice . And say, you're in the office or somewhere in public and you don't want to sing the 8 fa's then hum the fa's up the scale from C to C.
My band teacher told me this . I play the trumpet and he says to get to those high notes you use less air. To use less air and sustain those notes you must first breathe in. Do not breathe in through the top of your lungs. Use your Diaphram. When you sing and can't get to a high note, breathe in and make sure your tummy bulges . Make sure you're standing straight up or sitting straight. Don't do that too much when you're singing. only when the notes get high or else you'll end up yawning in the middle of a song!
When you sing to keep the audience entertained try this trick.
If there are a couple measures where you have 2 half notes tied together then use articulation ( gradually go from piano to forte or softer to louder.) My band teacher told us to try that when we played in our concert. It worked out fine and we sounded really cool.
Good luck if you have some kind of concert coming up!
:)
