I watched the Dallas Stars guy got knocked out last night and wheeled off in a stretcher... Then I saw a Columbus Blue Jacket break some ribs when he got slammed into the boards... then another Blue Jacket went to beat up the guy who slammed the other BJ into the board... and that BJ got penalized for 19 minutes... shouldn't the guy who really injures someone get a longer penalty than the guy who stands up for his injured teammate? I love hockey and I love hitting, but don't they need to control it a bit more??

they need to take out the instigator rule and let this guy's fight when they need to. if a team is down in the last 5 minutes and are trying there hardest to tie the game, the hitting gets harder and the game gets more physical and things happened at those times of the game. players are finding other things to do to get back at a player cause of this rule which needs to be taking out of the game cause you will see more injuries like that after a fight.

JuanB>>>> the boards aren't as hard has back in the 80's and earlier years today's boards they give away and one body check at one end makes most of the boards shack. back in the older arenas the boards where made of solid wood and concrete and they didn't move one bit and same for the nets today you touch them they come off to back in the day if you got checked in to it they wouldn't move one bit.

Part of the problem is Bettman...the other is the players themselves. Bettman put in the fighting rules and now teams get penalized worse for protecting themselves or a teammate than the guy who is out there trying to hurt someone. Put fighting back into the game and cowards like TooToo would get the snot knocked out of them a couple times and a lot of the cheap hits would stop....a player would jeopordize his own career and not just the other guys if he knew payback was in his future. Suspend the stickswingers and headhunters for double the amount of games the injured player misses or a minimum of 25 games for a first offense with bigger suspensions for repeat offenders. Missing those paychecks will cure a lot of the garage.

The other half of the problem is the players themselves. I have watched hockey for over 40 years and never do I remember a time in the game when the lack of respect for one another was more evident than now. Until they decide that they can play without trying to kill one another then the injuries will mount and the bad press will continue to damage the game. I also have played most of my life and know that hockey can be played real hard and tough with plenty of hitting and banging....without trying to injure eachother! Right now they are giving plenty of ammunition to the hockey haters, notice how the media jumps on the dirty stuff. It just drives the game further from the mainstream.

Well, they do penalize hitting... and head shots get penalized more and worse than other hits... but i agree they need to do something worse than the penalties they're giving because it's not deterring much.

This rule that allows the guy who stands up for his teammate to be punished worse than the guy who put the teammate in the hospital... that rule needs to go. that just encourages poeple to hurt the other team because they know they won't be punished that much and if they make the other team mad enough that they come to beat him up, then it's going to hurt the other team more than it hurts him. I'm sure the NHL had a good reason for it when they started this rule... I mean you should punish the guy who starts the fight more than the guy who fights back, but that rule should take into account the true instigator... the guy who seriously injures the teammate is the real instigator... of course the team is going to support the teammate. I think the fans support the guy who stands up for his teammate too... the NHL needs to realize that their rule has had the wrong effect and they need to change it.

Hockey wouldn't be hockey if they weren't allowed to hit, but you should certainly get punished worse if you put people in the hospital. Of course people can fake being hurt worse than they are, but you can't fake a broken rib. Honestly i believe that if you knock someone out of the game, you should have to sit out as many games as that guy is injured... but maybe not because that would stop all hitting if you'd be faced with the prospect of sitting out that long... but i really think they need to deter better.

That is a good point. THAT is why fighting is part of the game, and the penalty system of today is stupid. A guy knocks a guy out of the game - gets 2 minutes. Someone else sticks up for the guy that was hurt, does less damage but gets 20 minutes? Makes no sense. Which is more likely a deterrent to the problem hitter? A 2 minute penalty or the wrath of a tough guy?

They really need to look at equipment though. What you are getting hit with are elbow pads and shoulder pads that aren't really "pads" anymore. They are hard Shields and do a lot of damage. Same with the boards. They are now designed to give fans maximum visibility and good puck bounce, at the expense of injuries to players hitting them.

You are 100% right. the only way to get rid of the flagrant penalties and career-ending injuries is to go straight to the source of the problem. the penalty given for t9min, is rule 56A for instigation plus another 2min minor. the rule does nothing to stop the moron that is inciting violence one the ice.

don't get me wrong I love the hits and everything that makes hockey what it is. the biggest problem with today's league is the man sitting behind the desk that knows not one iota about hockey. he is the problem. he left the door open to individual interpretation of the rules. the refs don't help at all. look at all the concussions we have witnessed this season. there is more violence in the league than there was 60yrs ago. and now players are required to were protective gear.

the only thing to do to change things is to get rid of betts like the nba did and make the refs enforce their own rules. betts doesn't give a crap about the players or their needs. he cares only about us filling arenas coast to coast and paying his blind mice refs for something that monkey could do better.

my opinion is throw bettman out and get someone that will actually listen to the players and their fans! I'd be willing to bet my season seats that the violence would at least be curbed and the players would police themselves like they have in years past!
