I think anime are cartoons. Why do people get so 'protective' of 'anime' being called a cartoon? 'Anime' means Animation or Cartoon in Japanese (I've looked it up many times and it all means the same). Don't people know this? My friend at school is a anime nerd and whenever I call 'anime' a cartoon, she hits me. I have been researching on what's the difference between anime and cartoon and my conclusion is that there is no difference, they are both the same, difinition wise but not the origin. True 'anime' is from Japan, but so what? it is still a cartoon isn't it? Sure it's mostly rated for teens (15+) because of the sexuality, violance and language, but there are American cartoons that have that stuff too. I just don't get it.

Can some one please anser my question. It's been bothering me for weeks now.

people are uber-sensative over things that are not mainstream, and they are insecure. i am not bothered by the term "cartoons" when refereing to japanmation (yeah, thats right i called anime japanamation) dont let it bother you--i know some people that fly off the handle when i call it "japanmation" then others just dont care--i am of the latter

Well, there is a difference between anime and cartoons and that is the style. drawing style that is. The big eyes and other chracteristics. Just like the manga (same difference). although the humor tends to be different also. But besides being protective of the style it may just be that they don't want to be accused of watching cartoons, which is often considered to be for children.

Because there is a group of ppl called elitist (aka Weaboos or japanophiles) who believe japan is a sacred ground that can do no wrong. They feel their animation does not deserve to be grouped with inferior forms of animation. just ignore them. they're idiots.

Eh I suppose its all about the whole heritage thing maybe. and that they don't want to be compared to shows like sponge bob and naruto, or inyuasha and ed ed and eddy. I guess you could say the story lines and animating are on a whole different level

...for the same reason that 30 year old men say, "My mom lives with me." when it's actually them living at home with their mommas!
