Also, did the "professor" or one of the twins intend to kill danton's wife?

yes they are clones...remember in the movie how they tested the machine on the cats and his hat?? well they thought the machine was broken because they didnt see the cat or the hats but actually the cats and hats were transfered outside to the yard....

Yes, they are clones. The scientist that created it gave his machine to Danton but warned him not to use it. Of course Danton didn't listen and used it anyway for his magic act. Hope that answers your question.
