alice in wonderland was a mythical character, a storybook character, a story you'd tell kids about to help them learn to read, to train them to keep an interest, and maybe even to learn something from that they could use later in life. There are many stories out there like "mother goose" stories and "aesops fables" that are like that as well.
from Wikipedia: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is a work of children's literature by the English mathematician and author, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells the story of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy realm populated by talking playing cards and different players like the cheshire cat, characters dressed up with a top hat, miniature people (tweedle dum and tweedle dee), a queen, etc.
