Why is it important to study ancient art?

It is interesting to see the progression of technology at least, and the progress of technique. My first art project was long before I studied art in college. When I went to college, I saw that what I had been drawing had a name, 'Primitive'. My work is better for it, but I also appreciate other works because I see what someone needs to know. It is not until you appreciate portraits and realism that you can appreciate taking that up a notch. At least that is how I see it.
