I assume this is your homework.

(1) De Laval nozzles gave the best results because of the way it channelled the fuel burn for maximum thrust and use of fuel.

(2) they used a trigonometric calculation which measure the time of the flight and the rate of the fall with consideration given to past flight success under similar conditions, wind speed and direction and total time of flight as determined against a gravity constant for fall time of 32 feet per second.
