Fate of 16-yearold John Odgren?

A 16-year-old special education student, John Odgren, has been charged with killing a 15-year-old classmate, James Alenson, by stabbing him at least twice this morning at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Massachusetts. Odgren has Asperger’s syndrome and “no history of violence,” as his lawyer, Jonathan Shapiro, said.

Odgren has entered a plea of not guilty and is being held without bond out of the general population at the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge.

Odgren is due back in court on March 26. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole.

As for Motive --

Prosecutor Daniel Bennett painted Odgren as a student who terrorized others, had an obsession for forensics and weapons, and violently murdered a classmate he had never met. But Odgren's lawyer, Jonathan Shapiro, disputed the claims.

According to the account he offered in court and in documents: In the week before the slaying, Odgren wrote a list of things he would want if society ended. He began wearing a trench coat like the characters from author Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Odgren also said goodbye to his online friends.

Odgren remained and was checking Alenson's pulse when staff members arrived. He admitted instantly he did it, the prosecutor said yesterday.

When crime scene investigators came to the school to gather evidence, Odgren became excited and offered to help.

"The defendant started using his knowledge of forensics to assist them," said Bennett in his written statement. "In an excited manner, he offered to hold the measuring ruler during photographs. He pointed to different articles of clothing and places on his body where blood could be found."

Later, he told authorities he did not "even know the kid's name," and said, "If the media says it's video games or the books it wasn't, I don't know what it is."

In a notebook recovered by authorities, Odgren wrote, "If it looks like murder it was," and "If it looks like an accident, it wasn't."

The slaying was not the first time Odgren showed violent tendencies, Bennett said.

Odgren once chased a student while holding a shard of glass, and told other students at a forensics camp that he knew how to commit the perfect murder, Bennett said.

In another incident, Odgren showed a student a screwdriver he had in his pocket and warned the student not to "aggravate him." When the student said he was worried, Odgren tried to comfort him.

"He said, 'Don't worry, I decided not to kill you,' " Bennett said.

Odgren had marked Jan. 19 specifically on his calendar with the word "wolf" on it. Bennett said it was a reference to King's Dark Tower series.
