I went to see Van Halen with Sammy about 4 or 5 years ago and everyone in the audience was doing the "rock sign" with their hands, but then putting them together to make a sort of diamond. Now i watched the Hall of Fame ceremony and saw sammy and Michael do the same thing. i thought 4 years ago that the hand sign meant Diamond Dave because of the diamond in the middle, but now i'm confused. So to all of the Van halen fans out there, what does the hand gesture mean? And why doesn't anyone do it when Dave is around?

not totally sure here, but maybe it has something to do with the OU812 album. As with most male rockers, this has some sexual innuendo (think about the album title again). I think the diamond sign you're referring to is symbolizing a female body part. When the album came out, guy friends I asked were like, "Come on...it's so obvious!" So, hope that helps.
