The George & Fox
Crown Bridge, Penkridge

Known by locals as sometimes “The George” and sometimes “The Fox”, the establishment was regarded as a lucky, popular pub as early as the 1790s. It was a busy coaching inn specialising in stage coaches running between Birmingham and Liverpool when it also served as Penkridge’s post office. The original George and Fox was the birthplace of John Hewitt (1777), father of Abram S. Hewitt, elected mayor of New York in 1886. The historic inn was lost in the road widening of 1931
