The companies advertise their products to make money and they reach a bigger audience with T.V.
Also the company selling their product pays the network to show their commercials. So the network makes money and if you like the commercial and buy the product the company will make money.

And how many shows would still be on if people had to pay to watch them? I mean on an individual basis, not a cable subscription type deal. Advertisers subsidize the cost of airing a program in hopes that viewers will react by buying their products.
Btw, this is why daytime dramas are called "soap operas". Originally, soap companies would sponsor these programs, so that ladies (who were mostly at home keeping house during the day at that time) would run out and buy their products.

Commercials are a way for programming to be brought to you through your TV. When cable came, we had to start paying for channels without commercials (HBO and Cinemax). Public television is funded through government grants and donations from people like you.

The companies that advertise pay a fee to the networks. The networks themn use that money to pay for the television programs you watch. Or you can watch the cable channels that have no commercials. In that case you pay for the programs you watch.

networks/local affiliates sell their airtime to generate revenue, which in turn allows them to run a profitable business. the advertisers put their "spots" on the air so that you'll become interested/more aware of their product or service and spend YOUR money with them, instead of their competitor.
simple as that.

TV studios have to get their funding from SOMEWHERE. Without sponsors who buy screen time and pay revenue from their gross income, every TV station would have to be public television that would immediately come out of support from viewers like you.
