I got my period a few days after Valentine's Day and am still on it. It's getting really annoying. Does anyone know if this is regular side affect from the shot. I have been on Depo for a year now.

Also, how long does it take for the depo shot to ware off after I get off of it? I've heard that some people have trouble ovulating.

I have heard horror stories like this about Depo. so, yes, it is common. I have read that it is not uncommon to spot for the entire first 3 months or so also. If I were you I'd talk to a doctor about switching to something else. Depo also has some other pretty hefty side effects. good luck!

I've heard from several friends that they had a month long period as a side effect of the depo shot. I would recommend changing birth controls. No one wants to deal with a period for a week, let alone a month! The depo is an injection of hormones all at once rather than a small amount each day, like the pill. I do not know for sure if it causes any problems with ovulation after you're off it, but I wouldn't be surprised, considering that one depo shot can effect your body for over a month.

i am on depo as well, and have a period about 4 times a year. usually the week before my next shot. It is a totally normal side effect. Some people do not even have periods.

as far as having the depo wear off..it could take months to up to 2 years before you can become pregnant. Not sure about when you will go back to normal menstural cycles.

Don't worry, it is a completely normal side effect that has always happened to me and I've had the shot six times. Your body is just still adjusting to the Depo. I know it's annoying but it gets better with each shot. Unless it is really heavy, I wouldn't worry about it. I stop bleeding right after I get the next shot, so hopefully that is soon for you. Also, it says in the pharmacuetical information that came with my prescription "of those women who stop using [it] in order to become pregnant, about half of those who become pregnant do so in about 10 months after their last injection; about two-thirds who become pregnant do so in about 12 months, about 83% in 15 months, and about 93% in 18 months after their last injection. The length of time you use [it] has no effect on how long it takes you to become pregnant after you stop using it." Sorry if that was long but I always like statistics rather than personal horror stories that probably aren't normal. Hope that helps to set your mind at ease.

I have been on depo since the last week of January. I have spotting, a lot. my gyno says it is normal side effect. My sister in law has been off depo for three years and still has difficulty conceiving.

I have done this...it can take up to a year for depo to leave your system and for you to get pregnant again.

Everyone is different and you need to consult your doctor regarding your length period

i haven't had a period after the first 3 shots which was a few years back. while i was on it before, it took me a year or so to get pregnant after quitting. i've had friends that bled for months but only after their first shot. haven't heard of that happening after being on it for a year. it's not recommended to stay on it after 5 years anyhow, it depletes your bodies calcium, but it's the easiest and most effective thing for me, plus NO more tampons or pads, so i take vitamins, i'd ask your doctor more... it was also the first method i could get back on after having my kiddo and still nurse her.

I had it once, when I was going into menapause. Plus my tubes were tied, not only did it affect the cylces, it affected my mind. Just say it made PMS, look like a puppy. It takes about a month for it to wear off. Good Luck.

You are in BIG trouble if you've been on it for so long. See a doctor NOW!!! I've never had the shot, I don't know the side affects, just trust me...being on your period for this long is totally dangerous.
