Why don't you just buy a book on babies names?

A writer friend of mine used to just use names of people he knew, went to school with, etc. He'd sometimes use the first name of one and the surname of another.

If you want family names try looking up old census records. Another source might be people who have published their family history on the web - There are quite a few and even if they only follow the male line, you'll get the maiden name of each wife, which should give you quite a few to choose from. I just googled the name "Balcombe" at random and came up with a page with at least 6 other family names on it: http://www.mandywillard.co.uk/surnames/balcombe/balcombe.htm
You could start with your name, then your mum's, grandmother's, etc. If Balcombe is typical you'll have about 18 extra surnames by then. If you still can't find enough, use friends names or just search the names that have come up in those searches.

When you find a name you like the sound of I suggest you do a websearch to find out a bit about it - origin, meaning, etc, you can use to add a bit of colour to a character's background.

Best of luck with the project.

It all depends on what genre, fancifull, fantasy, sci-fi,novel, murder mystery, suspense, love, romance, easy way in a childs or fairy tale is too use some genuine place names as character names etc, IE Trumpet Pixley (Somerset) Midsummer Norton (Bristol) there are loads of place names you can use as character names or just use descriptive names like Indigo (Ink Blue), Saffron (Crocus) Sedgepig (Hedge Hog) the list is endless give some more information on the format you want to use and see if you get some better ideas

We need a bit more info really. You can't name a character without knowing anything about them.

I like the names,

Kayla
Maite (pronounced my-tie)
Nathaniel
and McKenzie

but who knows if they fit???
