I live near Portsmouth in the south of England, the city itself isn't so hot but being surrounded by the sea (Portsmouth is in fact an island) it has grown extremely slowly over the centuries due to land fills.......There used to be many beautiful buildings there which sadly were destroyed when Portsmouth was badly bombed during the second world war (this due to the naval docks being based there) It is an incredibly old naval port and Henry the eighth had his fleet there, you may or may not have heard of the Mary Rose which was dredged up from the Solent and is now in a museum in the city, this had been the pride of Henry's fleet and was sunk by the Spanish as it attempted to leave the harbour...
Portsmouth is overlooked by Portsdown Hill and standing at the top of the hill you can see Portsmouth in it's entirety, also Hayling Island to the east and the Isle of Wight to the south, Southampton can be see to the west......Nice place to live with the rolling South Downs behind it, the sea surrounding it and ancient market towns like Chichester, Winchester and Petersfield nearby.....

I don't live in a city, I live in a "new town" built in the 1960s. As a result it as no character, no soul and no sense of community. As you may have gathered.... I hate it!

Yes, I do. It's only about 15,000 people, so there is very little crime here, yet we have all the usual chain stores & restaurants.
We don't have major traffic issues, there are no gangs, the last murder was probably 20 years ago.
And our school system is superb!
