The movies of the 30's, 40's and 50's relied heavily on the actors ability to show emotions. They didn't have all the special effects of todays movies. Many times a raised eyebrow or a smile conveyed the message they wanted to express. The answer to your question is: it depends on the generation you're from and your taste in movies. I agree that many of todays movies are pretty gloomy, the effects, language and nudity are sometimes the only things that attract an audience.

I agree wholeheartedly. I particularly love the dialogue in older movies. Casablanca is my favorite movie of all time. The Maltese Falcon is fantastic as well. Who doesn't love Bogey? The stories are better in older movies. I think that's because it was much more expensive to make movies back then. The studios couldn't afford to put out bad movies. I read somewhere that some 30,000 movies are made each year and a couple hundred are released. If they could cut the number released to 52, one a week, we may be able to do away with such insta-classics as Norbit and Ghost Rider.

I think that as long as I'm watching a movie with a real point to it like "World Trade Center" or "The Green Mile" or something along those lines, then today's movies are way better. I do agree with you about most of today's movies being dark.. I can't watch half of them because of the gore and violence.. and I'm only 20. It's not like I'm middle aged saying this.. I'm still young and I can't stand to watch most movies.

If you really watch most of the with a background of movies from the 1940s you find that they are trashy remakes with updated props and scenery.
The "comedy" we see now is mostly humor you wouldn't want your kids to see, and that's in the movies that you should be able to take them to.
I guess the people in the 1940s were so "repressed" that they didn't know they were missing out on all the cool profanity and nudity and crude humor... Gee what a terrible time to be alive, huh?

I enjoy both in different ways.
I really like how cinematography and special effects have gotten so realistic. From a technical standpoint it just blows me away.
However, I agree that the morals and values portrayed in movies today really suck. It seems that we have no shame anymore, and we've become desensitized to immorality. In that sense I like the old time movies of the 40's and 50's and whatnot because they find other ways to express themselves in beautiful terms without using the same word (the f-bomb for example) as a verb, adjective, and noun. They're more intelligent. It takes a higher sort of person to find the beauty in them.

no because the movies today are just remakes of the old movies and based on old movies i really think its just a tim that directers and producers are going through only making remakes of old movies

The main difference I guess is just the technology and the added props but usually the plots revolve on same concepts or emotions.
