When I first heard this theory a couple of years ago, I treated it like email detritus or forwarded garbage; I stashed it to the back of my mind where it seldom bothered me. Alas, it has surfaced quite frequently in the past months: I've seen more than a few articles dealing with the subject in prominent magazines such as Time. It doesn't keep me up at night, but it does tickle and itch a bit. And, yes, I'm a little worried.
Can someone care to clear it up for me?
Offer a rebuttal to the scientific theories?
Much appreciated!

Its the year The Mayan Calendar ends, the calendar was created hundreds of years ago. Many people wonder why the Mayans ended their calendar that year, they speculate it must mean the end of the world. Some say the Mayans will retake over their ancient homelands. Like the illegals in the USA

I think all the predicting of the Apocalypse is rubbish. People have predicted it over and over again but it obviously hasn't occured yet. Scientists and the media can say the Apocalypse will be tomorrow, next month, or even the next century and we wouldn't know for sure. Only God knows and I can just assume that he wouldn't send the Apocalypse on a highly predicted time.
I mean didn't everyone say we were all going to die in 2000 when the mellenium came...
I do note the answer of the mayan calender ending. About that....although the Mayans were absolutely amazing in their astrology and track of time, I do not believe that they would be able to pinpoint the Apocalypse so many years ago but merely that 2012 was a distant date and I'm sure no one could imagine life going longer than that.
But who knows....it is a mystery to us all.

Please stop you are scaring me!(lol, just joking), but seriously I dont really believe in the "in of the world" I believe that God is going to make a return to put an end to all of the chaos, poverty, sadness, sickness, sin, and war in the world. We have been getting signs for many years. These signs are 9/11,people trying to take the Holy Land, Israel, from the Jews, wars and basically everything that we see. Truthfully we should be happy that God is coming back, I know that I am because this world is a terrible world. We really don't know when this is going to happen but the time is near, so I guess it could happen any time.

I have no idea what scientific theories you are talking about. Asteroid impact? None of these are very high probability (they can't predict well).
But if you must know, a couple of small ones (meters) passed between the earth and moon last month. Undetected until later.

Only if you believe the Mayan Calendar.
The Mayan Calander says the world will end in 2012 in December i think.
But if you believe in Jesus...the Bible does not state, "and the world ended in 2012..."

Here comes the end of the world...again.
Here is a list of a few more times when people were convinced that the cataclysm would happen in their lifetimes

The world already ended. Last year.
And in 2000.
It's supposed to end again in 2009.
No need to worry. It will just end...again...
