Stand by is only temporary it should be no more than an hour or two because you're still turned on and using power
Hibernate can be as long as you want the computer is effectively shut down and using no power

I don't really get your question cause you can hibernate/standby it when ever you want. They both are ways to say battery power when not using the computer. Hibernate although saves a lot of battery power and acts as if the computer is off. Usually in hibernate mode the computer can last for 1 month or so and then you might have to charge it. Standby although don't last as long, probably less than a couple of days.

new computers are actually made to stay on all the time. it is better to leave it on all the time, if you consistantly are going on and off, you can do more damage than leaving it on. hibernation uses memory on you harddrive, which can if used too much, can cause fragmentation. if you do not use it for more than five hours between uses, then turn it off or go to standby. any less than that i would just close the top so that the screen does not go bad in the meantime.

I usually just shut my laptop down, saves the battery from abuse..
as for standby, not very long..
If I'm going to be gone long enough for my laptop to go to standby, it's better to just shut it down..

It doesn't matter, I have botb of those option turned off on my laptop.
