various lirope and monkey grasses, and treadable plants will beavailble very soon at your garden center, also creeping phlox and ivy, yes mint is nice but they do grow tall and still have to be mowwed once in a while...break up the area into useable, treadable and veiwable spaces, use flagstones, bricks, treadble plants and low maintenace perenials in the vieable areas, even old bricks, and garde ties look cool for the usiable areas...in tow seasons and some works and creativity, you can have a very handsom yard, stylish, and extremely low maintenace and usable, and be the envy of your neighbors

I read an interesting article a few months ago about an experiment being done in Autralia where a mint was used instead of grass.
Or you could consider turning your backyard into a garden, perhaps with a patio for sitting and entertaining. I believe you can find information on that at HGTV.COM or DIY.COM.

Keep the grass and buy a goat. They work great! They feed themselves plus they keep the lawn well trimmed.

My Grandpa had clover in his backyard. No mowing and it is very soft to walk on.
