why aren't they in ABC order?

They are placed that way for a very intelligent reason. When the people invented the typewriter, they thought that people would make too many mistakes if the keyboard was in ABC order, because they thought that they would go too fast. By putting the keyboard in QWERTY order, it takes a bit longer to find the key you are looking for, but it makes typing much more efficient because you have to focus on the location.

There's a lot of history to the keyboard we currently use. You can read about it here http://njnj.essortment.com/keyboardhisto_rdqo.htm

hmm i once read (or saw... or heard) somewhere that on typewriters, letters that were frequently used together had to be placed far apart so they wouldn't stick together.
