The 1.9 diesel in the V40 was a Renault engine - the F8qt.
A newer Renault 1.9 diesel (e.g. the 120bhp F9Qt) should fit.

The Renault 2.0-litre F4R petrol engine should also fit, as should the Volvo petrol units used in the petrol V40 and S40.

Also, the Mitsubishi 1.8 from the Carisma should fit, as the Carisma and the V40 were built in the same factory on the same platform. For the same reason, the Mitsubishi 1.3 from the Space Star should also fit, but would be rather underpowered in the heavier Volvo.

The 1.9 diesel, is simiar in size to many other 1.9 diesels built to this day, including Fiat's JTD, and VW/Audi's 1.9. However- as your car is worth no more than a mars bar, a V40 1.9 1997..a hitchhiker would be embarrased to be seen in such a car. Go and buy yourself a new S40 or something.
