Because they are usually so unhappy in life and are in a mental state where they see no other way out of their misery. You may think "but there's always a way out"...but you are someone who has never experienced that depth of pain and unhappiness....I have been there. It's a state of being where you just want to give up because everything is so hard....it;s not a matter of just "wise up and get on with it"....it's complet desper that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemie.
Life is so hard and for some people it's just so hard to cope. People who think it's a selfish act have no idea what it's like to be in that situation....is it not selfish for others to expect them to live in mental torture?
Those who attempt suicide and do not succeed.. (and please don't say they are attention seeking, anyone, because that is not true..there are plenty of easier ways to get attention)..could answer your question even better than me...If you are and always have been healthy in mind and body then you will never truely understand and I dont think can ever fairly comment.

Hi there
A morbid and very dark question indeed. Most people who do commit suicide feel like there is just no other option for them. I can't imagine how much emotional pain these people go through but its usually the people that seem normal on the outside. One things for sure it takes the strongest will to be able to go through with it. Very sad for the family and friends they leave behind.
regards

Suicide is the last SEEMING
Resolve or Resort of an ailing, suffering mind!
If Nothing or No one comes forth to prevent the suicide from coming to the conclusion of ending his life - and he or she, cannot hold on to any reason why they should hang on to the COURAGE, if not to live, but (at least to exist . . until the passing of time, alleviation of pain, might come about) - Then I believe more than not that such a lost, wishful for help person, will end his/her life!
It is tragic indeed, but tell me, thus answering part of your own question : have you ever felt so desperate, as to contemplate suicide, that you almost went through with it?
I have . . but something in me, Primarily, asked of Itself : "Hey, wait a moment here, Why me . . Why now? I must help this wailing voice in me, seemingly insignificant NOW . . to YELL : NO, I won't let go of me!"
One MUST, unless one self-destructs the sound, the plea, that tiny little voice is protesting right through ONEself!

I think depression is one of the saddest things that can ever happen to anyone...if it gets to you, your brain starts losing focus on reality and, even something as terrible and irreversible as committing suicide, can became the only possible solution to someone's problems...whatever those may be...

That would be hard to answer since you can't ask the people who went through with it.

They have to have no hope that their life will ever get better and feel that their life is currently terrible.
Not that hard to get there actually.
