It depends.
Sometimes to rant, sometimes to rave. Sometimes to be creative, sometimes to re-memorize information. Sometimes to be helpful to others, sometimes to be helpful to myself.
Sometimes I'm looking to be complimentary, sometimes I'm hoping for a pat on the back. And I always appreciate some of the questions/answers that are thoughtful, creative or deep.
Often it's a combination of any and all of the above.
Peace

It's basically a social networks for us dorks. We get to interact without actually having to see/talk to another person, and education (either learning something or helping others to learn) is the pretext for said interaction. That's why it's so compelling -- it's a perfectly legitimate excuse to communicate with people without the pressure of forming a relationship if you don't want one.
It can also be self-serving to some people who like to show off their knowledge. But even then, I'd bet that those people still value the opportunity to interact with others, since you typically don't get a lot of that when you live in the basement of your mother's house.
If education were the only intent, then people would just post on Wikipedia where there's no direct communication between people, whereas communication is a fundamental part of answering questions.

1. A real great way to waste some time.
2. Getting a few good laughs reading &/or seeing how ignorant so many people in this world really are!
3. To actually help enlighten or otherwise provide an alternate perspective to some people who may see/read my answers.

To help when I can. Give advise, share experiences that Ive lived. Maybe brighten some persons day. Learn something new. To compare my opinion with other views. And to get a taste of how the rest of the world feels or what they think or want from life. The possibilities are countless!!!!!
