your question is wrong! you should have asked if there is a difference between 768Mb and 1Gb (not 1.28) why?

a laptop has only 2 memory slots and actually you have both slots occupied, one with a 512Mb stick and the other with a 256Mb stick. if you want to upgrade the memory you have to remove 1 stick (of course the little one) and in place of that one you install another 512Mb stick, so the resulting amount of memory will be 1Gb.

would you notice a difference - no!
i have a laptop with 2 x 512Mb and XP and for the most time only 600Mb are used, so i suppose an upgrade from 768Mb to 1Gb doesn't improve the performance.

addendum:
ok, thanks for the hint - did you notice that there is a category "Desktops"? please don't confuse people with questions placed in the wrong category.

my answer remains nearly the same also for a desktop PC except for one case. if the memory type is DDR2 and the mobo supports dual channel mode, then it's possible to increase the performance with an additional 512Mb stick when using the two 512Mb sticks as dual channel pair and the 3rd stick (256Mb) in the 3rd separate slot.

It depends upon your operating system- for a machine running Windows 98, you'd see no difference. For Windows XP or 2000, you'd see an improvement.
