My roommate is feeling down lately, so we're going to go get him a pet. We already have a cat and a dog, so we were thinking something small, like a parrot, or a bearded dragon. What are the ups and downs of having either?

The lizard, they are calmer, easier to take care of and will just look at you as you talk to them.

Sounds like your roomate is looking for more of a companion animal. So I would say a bird, specifically a kind of parrot, would be a great choice. They are more attatched and loving towards their owner. Bearded dragons might be fun to watch, but they don't have that cuddly aspect to their personalities. On the plus side, the dragons are easier to care for, cleaner, and ALOT less noisier than birds. But if you're looking for a bird with lower noise level, try a parakeet or cockatiel. I had a parakeet, he was one of the most affectionate pets I've had, AND he could even say a few words. I find them alot more entertaining than the reptiles. If you do get a bird, try to find a cage with a scatterless base, as this will help keep down the mess. I didn't have one, and my birdy got seed hulls everywhere on my floor! Just make sure that you keep your animal, whether it is feathered or scaled, away from your cat and dog. They have natural predator instincts, and this can put your little friend in danger.
Good luck!

Birds make a lot of noise and lizards don't! Lizards are better...well that's my opinion!
