They felt in the North they wouldn't encounter the same Jim Crow type restrictions they saw in the South. It was their chance to become independent and own land and property, work for themselves or a corporation vs a sharecropping industry.
The North allowed them to work in real jobs, but many areas were still segregated. Separate but equal was still prevalent in the North though not always to the same extent as in the South.
