Did you install any new audio software or audio hardware?
Or did you do any changes to the setting in your device manager?
Sometimes conflicts among settings will stop your device function properly. Do you have the Boot CD that comes with the Toshiba? You may want to reinstall the sound driver.
I had a same experience once and after reinstall driver it works fine.

what kind of music are you trying to play? Is it in a movie, or just an mp3 or wav file? If it's either of those, then check the volume control on the player, ie, if you're using Windows Media Player, or RealPlayer, etc.
