I'm thinking of visiting colleges soon but I want to know when is the best time. Should I visit colleges before I apply or should I wait until I get accepted to visit the colleges?
I want to apply to some out of state, but I don't know if it's worth traveling all that way to a college I might not get into.

You need to visit the college which you intend to enroll for your course.

The best timing depends in your schedule and capacity to travel especially those which are away from home. Nearby colleges can be visited easily.

i went to a college out of state and i didn't visit until i got in, i took a 4 day trip did the tour ment some people/advisors and profs.

if there in your state i say visit them before you apply that way you know if you like the school before you spend 30-60 dollars on app. fees.

what is the best time? thats up to your schudule! some people start in high school i started in feb/march the year i was going to start. most colleges have one tour a week (mon-friday) so pick a college find when the tour and do it.

and because you're going to be nervous prepair questions ahead of time about things like safety, dorms, advising, extra fees for department/classes stuff they don't adertise in the pamplets.

My kids started visiting schools when the oldest was a freshman in high school. By the time the youngest applied he had been on at least 60 or 70 campuses and had stayed overnight on at least 8 or 10. He knew perfectly what kind of campus he wanted, what size city he wanted to be in, country or city, north or south. When he went to apply he had seven schools in mind that fit his idea about how college should work.

There was no pressure. We just stopped by, walked around, had lunch at the cafeteria and went on our way. When they were getting ready to apply, they went through the campus tours. When they applied, they went and stayed overnight with older friends who were attending that college.

That system worked out really well for all of them.

Always decide before acceptance. That's like getting married and not meeting your spouse until after the ceremony.

Visit while the students are in classes - that way you can talk to people who actually attend instead of having the University tell you about all the good stuff. Ask to meet with an RA if possible.
