I'm 17, about to leave school. I want to work at the nursing home for my gap year so I can save up to go abroad before going to university. I had elderly relatives who I wheeled about when I was younger though they are all deceased now.

expect a grilling!! they'll ask why you want to go into the care profession (obviously) and they'll probably ask what you'd do in certain scenarios. they'll want to know if you've had any previous experience around the elderly, as it can come as a shock. just stay level headed and take time to think through your answers, especially if they give you scenarios. good luck!! xxx

You'll be asked all the usual..."Do you have any previous experience" "Why would you like to work for us", "What skills can you contribute to our team"etc.. But you will definitely be asked if you have a criminal record, it's compulsory when working with the elderly, children or people with special needs. It's almost a dead-cert that you'll have to do a CRB (criminal records bureau) disclosure...just a simple background check done through official sources. Usually the company will pay for these but sometimes you'll be asked to stump up for it...they're not too expensive ($60?) and can be reimbursed at the companies discretion if you get the job :) x

You should expect to work very hard, long hours for prob minimum wage in a dirty thankless (most of the time, at least from the management) job. Clients will be mostly nice with a few who may attack you, swear at you so on.
The best bit is the job satisfaction. It will be nothing like wheeling your relatives about.
