A few years ago clothing styles took on a 70ish look. Now it seems we have moved to the 60s. I think it odd that we are on some cycle, and our clothing style is influenced by political influences.
any ideas or research on this cycle?

BTW if you have not noticed the trend then you have no sense of style and will not understand, so dont bother answering,,,NYA

Clothing goes in and out and comes back in most people know that if they put it up and keep it for a while it will be in style again eventually. If you are smart that is what you do. By the way what is wrong with hippies I might be considered hippyish and some of my friends are hippy's so what? Not everyone has the money to wear 1,000 suits every day, nor drive a porsh, that doesn't mean we aren't all human beings and that don't mean that it can't change at any time.

Xialou,

Yes, I have noticed more hippy influence on our culture today more than a few years ago. I'm very happy the 70's retro didn't last. I've been told, though I don't see it really, that my wardrobe is heavily influence by the 60's. I've embraced it after consideration. I've also added some whimsy for fun from the 80's. I've mixed those influences with classic good quality pieces for a more clean sophisticated look, that I believe many other women and men in the U.S. share today.

Coincidence, I don't think so. Over simplified, people are aware and aren't comfortable with the political direction our country is going. Ghetto urban is also rampant, which in itself is a form of protest. People today are seperatists and split yet still forming castes to feel unified. They want to be unified and connect but are unable to agree on a direction. Encouraging and promoting the pursuit of freedom from repression and sharing information should be our goal for the near future. I predict it may happen.

Examples of clothing reflecting political unrest though out history and the world has been cited numerous times as an accurate expression of the mood of the people. I kinda think that something big is coming. What do you think it's gonna be? Information and technology will only continue to grow. People will only naturally become more educated in this country now that they can use this tool of information technology to gather combined knowledge. Although, the gap between poverty and repression and wealth and independence could become bigger if everyone is not granted access to these information technologies. Small cost big return. Pass it on. What do you think?

Yeah, I've noticed that. I've also noticed a lot of the 80s styles coming back too though, and that's even scarier.

It isn't so much that our clothing trends are influenced by political events, it's what the clothes from the 60s represent.

I find it scary, myself. We already went through the 60s, and even though the Civil Rights movement was a good thing, and VERY necessary, the rest of the 60s should stay there.

Besides, our musicians aren't as good as the ones in the 60s were. They really shouldn't even try.

I've definitely noticed it, but I'm not sure it's connected to political influences. It's a given in the fashion world that every trendy style comes back around again sooner or later. If I had saved my bellbottom jeans and platform shoes from the 60s, I'd be wearing them right now!

And I'm very curious why so many people seem to feel threatened by hippies. What's up with that?

I've seen alot of styles coming back from the 80's too. Shoulder pads, but not quite as extreme as then. And, military style clothing from the punk era of that time too. Also, military style or military influenced business dress for women as well. I think it is a mixed bag right now. Lots of victorian influence as well with lots of lace. More hippies today would be refreshing. I like the ideas of love, life and peace more than I do death and war.

If you are referring to the bohemian style, patched jeans, bandannas, etc. - I have noticed that the 60's and early 70's fashions are back. Leg warmers (80's) are also making a come back. The counterculture generation of the 60's never really left, but rather the original styles have returned. I think the fashion style is indicative of the new peace movement in this country and increased awareness (I use that word loosely) of yuppie hippies and/or yuppies as I like to call them.

It seems clothing styles have a twenty year cycle.

In the 80's a lot of the new wave fashions were early sixties based.

But you're right, the hippie look of the late sixties seems preety chic right now.

I guess my old long haired overall wearing look is "in".Cool.

i think there's been a retro hippie look that cycled in the 80s and 90s as well as now.

I've noticed a sudden influx of unbathed young adults, between the age of 21-30 or so.
The clothes are not as big of a surprise as the uncleanliness is.
Is it so much to ask young people to wash their hair everyday?

I've definately noticed. But what does not noticing it have to do with your sense of fashion? I just think it's funny that we keep moving backward, further and further back into time. It's crazy, but I stick with runway fashions! =)
