Yes, Butterfly taste with their feet so if you spray your plants with soapy water as soon as the butterfly lands on it it will taste it and fly away without laying its eggs.

Insecticidal Soaps do work well. Not sure what kind of caterpillars your talking about but I'm sure they must be eating your plants. Inspect your plants regularly for leaf damage.

Yes you can I always throw my left over washing up water over roses etc.It keeps Green & Black fly down.

No harm in trying, even if it doesn't work you will have some pretty clean caterpillars
