Hi Mystery,

No you can use it on over the air. When we got our first TiVo we didn't have cable.

It works fine. When you set it up you tell it how you get your programs then it will have you confirm a few of your channels and you are good to go.

You can use ether one just go to settings and select antenna satellite or cable. It will work I have one and they are awesome.

no cable but you need a satalight to use tivo recording

You can record from an over-the-air TV antenna.
