Is there such a measure?
I've often thought about trying to do better than my crappy salary by starting my own business, but what are the chances of success? I tend to be a bit of a coaster the office, perhaps having a stake in the business would give me the motivation I need.
Any tips for what you need to do/not do in order to be successful?

A coaster won't make it, usually someone who does make it , is a real go-getter and will work long hours to make it happen.

And how long can you live without an income, aside from spending on the business, you will need at least a years worth of money to live on, to last you until the business is profitable enough to pay you.

For a "coaster," the success rate will be ZERO. The chances of success are about 1 in 10.

depends on a lot of factors,

1. type of business
2. size of business
3. competition
4. starting capital
5. ??????

Best way for you to find out if it will work is to do a Business Plan.
