There are actually several plants that are a natural repellant, but it would require you changing some of your landscaping. Lemon balm or lemon grass is a strong repellant as well as marigolds (which also repell man types of insects). If that doesn't work, you can either make a diluted citrus spray (cats hate that lemon/citrus smell) or you can purchase a spray at your local pet store that's made for training cats to stay off furniture/not scratch.

One big thing, make sure that if a cat does use your landscape as a litterbox that you get rid of all of the waste it left. If a cat can smell that they have gone in a spot before, they will do it again. Those spots would also be a good place to spot-treat with lemon/spray/whatnot. Good luck!

It's hard to be a cat sometime. I never let my cat use a little box because I think it disgusting thing in my house, and I don't like to spend my time smell and touch the cat poop everyday. I am different than you. I train my cat to do it outside. However, my cat wouldn't do it in my garden because I will make a no no noise to let she know to not do it there. My animals wouldn't get out my yard even if I have the gate open. I have a dogie door for my animals to go in and out and close it at night when they all in the house. I also train them and have a place for them to go. I make sure it would be a comfortable for them to go with and peaceful private enough. If you don't have a big yard and these are not your cats then I think you got the best answers from everyone else so far. Hope you enjoy the spring.

Well, I can tell U,

Squirt Guns dont work. My neighbor has 4 outdoor cats & they keep goin back into my other neighbor's yard ~which I maintain & trim for her (has a very bad back).

I tried Mothballs once, & my cat played w/ them. Didnt do nothing to her. She pick'd em up in her mouth & carried them all over the place.

As for trapping the cats, depends where U live~ in town or out in the country. I lived both in & outside of Phoenix & Cat Traps r legal & suggested for just about any nuisance in Maricopa County. Here they'll even give them to U for free. U just have to haul them back to wherever U got the traps from.

I would call Ur City &/or County Animal Control. & ask them about the traps.

Here's a repellent others haven't mentioned: a powder that smells like coyote urine that you can sprinkle in the flowerbeds. I believe my husband ordered it from an on-line website once to get rid of a racoon who was digging in our lawn. It seemed to be effective, but he also used various other things to discourage the racoon. It eventually went away.

Check with your local animal control and see if you can live trap them. If not, try any of the peppers, black pepper, cayenne, crushed red peppers. It irritates their noses. Also, if its warm enough, get a water gun. A couple of squirts once in a while won't harm them, but it should scare them enough to leave the area.

Go to your local nursery and buy some animal repellant spray. Ropel is the brand I know here, works very well.

Build a fence around your landscape. If you put alittle food somewhere close to a litterbox they will use it instead of your landscape.

keep them inside! it's too dangerous for them outside anyway, they get fleas, mites, and worms, fights with and diseases from other animals, run over by cars, etc. in general, outdoor pets do not live as long.
