You will not beable to use your laptop as a monitor for your desktop computer. The VGA monitor port on your laptop is only so you can use an external monitor for your laptop not the other way around, sorry....

Unable to use as a monitor for your computer. What you need to do is buy network cards (or go wireless with your laptop). Set up a local network and then, with same programmes on both computers, share your files so that you can open your desktop files on your laptop.

This is just a very basic response but you will be able to find a more explicit explanation in any good computer magazine or why not try searching 'local network' on the net.
