What if? He should avoid you first and save you the trouble. I would.

NO! What kind of a friend avoids another friend just for his/her sexual orientation? A true friend stands by their friend's side no matter what. Even if your friend's gay, just talk to him normally. Don't avoid him. If he starts liking you (like how a girl would like a guy), just tell him that you're not interested in guys, that you only like him as a friend, that you're not gay, that you're 100% straight.

If he's your friend you shouldn't be avoiding him at all. You should be there for him and acceot him. I know it's "uncool" for a straight man to be friends with a gay guy, but others will start to look up to you and gain your respect. They'll see that you dont care what other people think, that you judge people by who they are, not what they are. People like that, especially the women.

The way to hurt him least is with honesty.
Express any confusion or discomfort you feel, tell him you're uncomfortable (or whatever is you're really feeling) with him, or with yourself, whatever. Your honesty may save what friendship is real, but without your candid truth, there's no chance to deal with the real thing between you.
If peer pressure is greater than your friendship with him, be honest with yourself and, informing him why, let him go.
Be decent, be kind. Good luck, hope you don't end up losing a great friend.
Have a star.

Avoiding him is the one thing that's going to hurt him the most. Avoiding him will hurt him more than if you yelled at him and put him down for it. What he needs is your support, not your judgement.

I think that the best way not to hurt his feelings is by NOT avoiding him to begin with. Try being supportive.

well, you must not think too much of your "friendship" if you'd avoid someone just because they are gay. if you were a "true" friend, you'd be able to talk to him, and remain his friend.
turning your back on someone....be if family or friend....just because they are gay (or whatever you happen to have a problem with...race, religion, culture...), is cold, dude! if that's the kind of "friend" you are, he is better off without you!

Why would you want to avoid your friend? There is a reason he is your friend. Are you willing to give something as special as friendship up just because his life style makes you uncomfortable.

I have to say you aren't really a friend. He is the same person he was before you knew he was gay. You'll be doing him a favor by saying "I'm sorry I'm a closed minded person that doesn't accept homosexuals. I can't be your friend." And stop associating with him.

You want to avoid your friend because he's gay? What an ignorant question. You could just tell him that you want to avoid him because he's gay, he probably wouldn't want to be friends with such an idiot. Problem solved.
