I think there are different levels and sources of schizophrenia. Mostly it would seem to be a chemical imbalance of some sort. Diet and heredity seem to play a role also. How people metabolize or process sugar and alcohol etc. It also seems to be emotionally based or over-reactive. Supposedly some parts of the brain may be larger or more active and drug therapy or long term sedation might reduce it's affect and size. There may be procedures such as Gama Knife treatments that could reduce these areas of the brain. Overactive parts of the brain might be controlled by being in non-threatening environments and eventually having a calming affect. Sleep deprivation also seems to play a huge role too. I am currently using Trazodone but my psychiatrist thinks I will stop my other medication instead. The Trazodone is really cheap and seems to work very well for better sleep patterns. This could also be some type of PTSD post traumatic stress disorder which I think is just the same thing but in a shorter time frame. I have heard of certain visual flashing light therapies The Gama Knife treatment is unfortunately too expensive.
