gb is gigabytes, its how much room there is to store files on the computer. if u think u can get ipods for 2gb and they hold 500 songs 60gb is a lot, so that will be fine for you. RAM is the speed that the computer runs at, say if u open a program its how fast / slow that program will load. 512 is an average speed (u will find it really fast compared to what you have been used to) and this can be easily upgraded if u find its slow. just check the overall processor speed to, that will be ghz, and make sure thats a highish number.
if u use it a lot for photo's you may find that a cd-rw (cd re-writer) would be useful to back up the pictures, or even a dvd-r or dvd-rw if you have a lot as dvd's will hold a lot more than cd's. another good thing to check is how many usb ports the machine has, for example mine has 4 and i pretty much use all 4, mouse, printer, ipod and camera. you can by extra expansion drives but thats just another expense after buying a computer. (dont let it be the deciding factor obviously, but its sometnhing to think about.)

For the average, non-gaming, computer user the specs on your laptop of choice is plenty. You will hear many people tell you that you need more, but it's simply not true.
However, make sue your laptop, which most are these days, is upgradable and that the components are not integrated. (Gateway is sometimes bad about this). Programs get bigger every day and require more space on a hard drive , so there is the potential that a few years down the road you will need bigger hardware. What you are looking at should definitely hold you over.
A side note, if you really are interested in keeping up with the times, look at Apple's Macintosh computer. Their technology is so much more advanced that they can run their programs and windows. PC just hasn't kept up. You also will want to comparison shop online sites like www.tigerdirect.com. They are often much cheaper and sell new products with warranties.
Happy shopping!

Ram referse to the amount of memory in your computer that is used to to run your programs. GB is the amount of space on your hard drive that you can use to store files.
If all you are doing is surfing the net and not installing games or large programs or storing music or video or picture files, then 60GB will be sufficient. But if you are doing alot of downloading of music, video or pictures and doing photo or movie editing, then you should think about updating to a larger hard drive.

RAM is random access memory and GB is gigabyte. RAM can shorten load times on applications and overall keep your computer running smoothly. The more GB you have, the more space you can put into it, 1 gigabyte is 1000 megabytes. So the more GB you have, the more media or applications you can install into your computer. It sounds like your laptop is more efficient than your PC.

I have an old laptop, 512ram, 20Gb hard drive. I am changing it to 1Gb. The cheapest way for you would be to increase the ram. You have lots of storage space. I have an external memory. The best thing about up grading your present computer is you know it. And it is cheaper.

Hi,
The laptop should be more than adequate for the use you require. As you still have 82% free space you obviously dont use much and therefore losing 10gb wont affect you that much.
Happy Computing!

yes, this laptop would be just fine for you if you're just internet browsing, doing some word documents and stuff. it will support (with respect to the graphics card) basic games, if you so need. but otherwise, you'll be just fine.

That should be fine for what you are going to use it for. Basic applications should work with high speed on that laptop.
